Pussy Riot is a Moscow-based Russian female protest punk music and performance art band. Since its inception in August 2011, it has had a fluctuating membership of about 11 women ranging in age from about 20 to 33. The group performed controversial guerrilla performances in public locations, which were recorded as music videos and distributed on the Internet. Feminism, LGBT rights, resistance to Russian President Vladimir Putin and his policies, and Putin's ties to the Russian Orthodox Church's leaders were among the group's lyrical topics. Members of Pussy Riot have been imprisoned for their creative expression.
