Margaret Atwood + Your Zines

AT HOME ART DATE | watch read create

“I really felt like if we were going to attempt this great, prolific novel that’s meant so much to so many people, it had to be really—as we’ve said many times—balls to the wall. It had to be dark, it had to be realistic, it had to be beautifully shot. And it had to live up to the book.”

--- Elisabeth Moss on Handmaid’s Tale

This week's AT HOME ART DATE combines three elements that open up your imagination through words, images, and three-dimensional comedy and tragedy through building your own zines. How can tragedy and comedy both go “balls to the wall?”

(element one) WATCH The trailer for Atwood’s Masterclass.

(element two) READ Atwood’s quote on tragedy and comedy.

(element three) CREATE two zines -- one tragic, one comedic

(element one) WATCH this trailer.

(element two) READ this quote from Atwood.

“[Everyone] ‘writes’ in a way; that is, each person has a ‘story’—a personal narrative—which is constantly being replayed, revised, taken apart, and put together again. The significant points in this narrative change as a person ages—what may have been a tragedy at 20 is seen as comedy or nostalgia at 40.”

— From a 1990 interview with The Paris Review

(element three) CREATE two zines using this technique. The first zine tells the story of a person in their 20’s as a tragedy. The second zine, tells the same story from the character’s perspective 20 years later as a comedy.

Allow yourself the freedom of a full week to make these zines. Take quiet moments and let your imagination swirl around in your head. Be sure to give yourself the gift of following through for yourself and create these zines. Then take it a step further and give these zines to a friend as a gift.

Finished? Congratulations!

Well done, artist!
