Alice Neel is widely considered as one of the twentieth century's most important American figurative painters. Neel's ability to paint persons around her with unwavering truth, honesty, and compassion shines through in her paintings. Her paintings are honest, sensitive, and, at times, hilarious, addressing political and social concerns both openly and subtly. She is praised for capturing the essence of a person while also representing the period in which she lived. She was born in Pennsylvania, in 1900, and died in New York in 1984.
